Akwa Ibom state governor, Udom Emmanuel, has expressed fears at the use of the country’s security agents for actions, saying that, such could threaten the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming elections.

He expressed this fear while receiving the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington at Government House Uyo and called on the global community and international agencies to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair and credible manner. He alleged that the use of the police by the opposition to intimidate key supporters of the PDP on trumped up charges could lead to a breach of peace in Akwa Ibom and Nigeria at large. According to him, only an unfettered participation of the people in a free and fair poll, would guarantee peace and urged the Ambassador to caution the ruling party on the noticeable acts of desperation by attempting to compromise security and other agencies of government.
Earlier, Symington had enjoined Nigerians to uphold the democratic norms of fair play and eschew acts that might truncate the forthcoming elections in the country as the state Police commissioner, Musa Kimo, assured him of their commitment in ensuring free, fair and credible polls.
