The senator-elect for Benue North West Senatorial District, Hon. Oker Jev, has said defeating Senator George Akume in last Saturday’s election does not make him equal with the lawmaker.
Jev told newsmen in Makurdi, the state capital yesterday, that he has a lot of respect for Senator Akume who has served the state for 40 years.
He said: “The senator is still my leader, I am his boy, the fact that I have taken over from him does not mean we have become equals.”
Jev, who said he was humbled by the victory, but not surprised because the seat was meant for Buruku, where he hails from, added that it was given to Akume on loan for 12 years without renewal.

According to him, “that is why my people asked me to present myself for the service and all of us presented ourselves for the people to make their choice’’.
“The federal constituency that I represent at present in the National Assembly is 99 per cent a rural setting. My agenda in the National Assembly is mostly about rural and youths development; so now that my scope of work has been expanded, I will be closer to the electorate to know what they want for better representation.”
While dismissing the allegation by Akume that the election was rigged, Jev explained that this is the fifth election he had contested and won, stressing that it was the most peaceful election of all in terms of what transpired on that day and in the area of violence.
