Doris Dauda was the cynosure of all eyes at ‘Aesthetics and Tranquility: Heritage of the Plateau’ in a 5-day maiden solo art exhibition of paintings and sculpture works. Held at Plateau State Library Complex, beside Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos Campus, the show served as her contribution in the promotion of art and culture in the state.

The show attracted guests from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the art community, the academia, friends, family members and staff of NYSC Educational Development Group (EDG), who came out in their numbers to celebrate one of their own in an exhibition that was thrilling.

On display were 52 artworks comprising paintings and sculptures reflecting the heritage of the state and other communities across the country. Among the works were the portraits of two governors of the state: Lalung Simon and Solomon Dalong.

Another of Doris’ colourful painting shows the usual Lagos hectic life, with buses clustering, and traders still finding a way to carry out their daily activities. It is the regular Lagos fare. A lot of Dauda’s paintings and sculptures portray the place and significance of womanhood through the stress and progress of daily living. To be seen include a beautifully dressed woman in African attire, with coral beads decorating her neck, while cooking on a clay pot set over the fire.

According to Dauda, “As a female artist, I share the pains women go through in the world today. And as an artist, I want to encourage Nigerian woman not to be intimidated or have low self-esteem, but to believe in themselves and soar high in everything they do. Every artwork has an interesting story to tell.”

Dauda, a native of Gbayi, is from the FCT, Abuja, graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in fine art and majoring in sculpture. She is currently a Corps member serving in the state.
