Former Ajax footballer, Jerge Hoefdraad is critically injured in the hospital and not dead as police wrongly reported after he was shot in the head at a party in Amsterdam-Zuidoost.

The 35-year old was trying to break up an argument at a party on Sunday, August 1, when he was shot, according to his former club.

It was subsequently reported that Hoefdraad, 35, had lost his life, only for police to retract that statement and confirm he was in critical condition.

The updated statement reads: “To our regret, the message was incorrectly reported this afternoon of the death of the 35-year-old victim of the shooting incident on Stekkenbergweg.

“He is in a very critical condition in hospital. We deeply regret this and apologize to his family.”

A suspect has already been identified thanks to several witness statements, although the individual has yet to be arrested.

The police force has urged the suspect to come forward and hand themselves in to the authorities.

The statement reads: “The detectives now have very strong indications about the identity of the man who is suspected of having fired the shots.

“The police are therefore calling on him to come and report himself.”

It continues: “The detective has started an extensive investigation and is urgently looking for footage and witnesses.

“At the time of the shooting, just before 6 o’clock, a party was going on in the building on Stekkenbergweg.

“For that reason, the police are urgently calling on witnesses who have not yet been spoken to come forward.”

Hoefdraad started his career with Ajax before turning out for the likes of RKC Waalwijk, Telstar, Almere City and SC Cambuur.
