Group warns politicians against violence in 2019

A non-governmental organisation, West African Network for Peace Building (WANEP) South-south zone has warned politicians in the country against the use of violence during the 2019 elections.

Speaking in Calabar at the weekend, Zonal Coordinator, WANEP, Eme Okon urged sensitising the public against violence during the coming election.

Noting that democracy has derailed in Nigeria, the group said violence experienced during election today is worse than when the country returned to civil rule in 1999.
Calling for increased public interest in aspirants and their conduct, Okon said politicians would begin to change for the better, when the media beams searchlight on their negative activities.

She said: “If you don’t change the system, nobody will change it for you, and if we don’t take action to change the system, the people that are doing the wrong thing will think it is business as usual. In whatever group we belong, let us talk about the need to use the right way to choose leaders. If we don’t do that, we are creating more rooms for violence.”
