The Eleyele playing-ground of Ibadan Polo Club came alive yesterday when top players from across the country converged on the arena to vie for honours in the annual Ibadan International Polo tournament. The competition, which has nine trophies at stake, will end on February 4.

Ibadan Polo Club, which is an affiliate of Nigeria Polo Association (NPA), On Tuesday started receiving the players from within and outside the country, including stars of such top polo clubs as Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Lagos and Argentina.

Dangote Cement (major sponsor), Senator Abiola Ajimobi, Lead City Group, Makon Group, Shoreline, Princeton Health Management and Boff Insurance have all signed up to sponsor the event.

Among the big players in Ibadan to compete for prizes are Konyinsola Owoeye (+1 handicap), who doubles as the captain of Ibadan Polo Club, Ahmad Umar, who has handicap (+3, Kwame Isa with +3, Seyi Oyinlola and Jamil Umar with +2 handicap.

Speaking with newsmen on the eve of the tournament, the President of the host club, Dr. Sina Adegunle said arrangements had been concluded to make this year’s tournament a grand and memorable event, adding that the polo field, club house and stables are all in good shape to entertain the
players and accommodate horses.
