The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Kogi State Council, has demanded an immediate reinstatement of full salary payment as against the percentage payment particularly of primary school teachers.

The union described the current situation where some of their members received N6,000 as monthly salary as ‘very ridiculous’.

It said, “There is uncertainty in the amount paid to teachers in Kogi State as the take home is grossly below any approved minimum wage either by former or present government while other entitlements have become elusive.”

The newly elected Chairman of NUT, Kogi State Council, Joel Salifu, spoke for the union during the inauguration of new officials on Tuesday at the union secretariat in Lokoja.

The new union leader, who lamented that primary school teachers in Kogi State receive peanuts in the name of salaries, pleaded with the authorities both at the federal and state levels responsible for teachers’ salaries to redress the embarrassing situation.

He called on teachers to set aside ethnic, religious and sectional considerations and unite to struggle for a just course that would cater to their wellbeing.

Salifu commended his predecessor, Thomas Ayodele, for the purposeful and eventful leadership he rendered to teachers, despite all the odds and obstacles placed on his way.

He praised Ayodele particularly for the dogged struggle and successful reclaiming of the Teachers House that was fraudulently sold to some powerful citizens.
