A lecturer with the Abia State Polytechnic has died after he couldn’t raise money to pay for his medical treatment in the state. The lecturer, who was also a former Dean of the Department of General Studies in the polytechnic, has been identified as Dr. Achi Godswill.
It was gathered that Godswill reportedly fell sick, but couldn’t raise the funds needed to get medical attention. This was allegedly because of the school’s inability to pay the 11-months’ salary arrears it owed him. The deceased was said to have died, 10 days after his mother’s died.
It was also alleged that his mother died because he could not also pay for her treatment. Sources told New Telegraph that Godswill and his family were also about to be thrown out of their residence in Aba because he couldn’t pay his rent before his death.

A lecturer, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said that Godswill had been in and out of hospital in the last two months, and couldn’t afford medical attention since he was still being owed 11 months arrears by the school management.
The lecturer urged the Abia State Government and the school management to make haste and pay the 11-month salary arrears owed staff, in order to save them from death and starvation.
Reacting to questions, the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, (ASUP) Abia Poly Chapter, Mr. Uma Godswill, confirmed the death of his colleague, insisting that the lecturer died as a result of his inability to foot his medical bills.
When contacted, Acting Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mrs. Chinyere Eze, initially insisted she was in a meeting, then suddenly became hostile. She refused to respond to questions about Godswill’s death, medical bill and salaries owed him by the school management.
