The training had the Red Cross instructor, who mentored and prepared students from the various departments in the Faculty of Science on the various ways to treat issues concerning injured sports men and women.

Speaking on the essence of the training, the Red Cross Instructor, Ashiru Olayinka said Nigeria has poor attitude towards response to emergency cases, which calls for increased education and training of more people on how to respond and deal with such cases when they arise.

He said most fatal emergency cases on the pitch could be averted if there were more first aid response personnel available when such incidents occur.

Also speaking at the workshop, the Faculty’s Welfare Secretary, Nlemadim Tony said the safety and well being of sports men and women was paramount in the faculty, adding that the association organised the programme to train and equip its medical personnel on responding effectively to first aid and emergency cases on the pitch to avert disaster.

“A lot of people are neglecting the importance of first aid and emergency response and we need to be more aware of the consequences, as it could escalate minor issues to severe cases,” he said

On the benefit of the training to the sports participants, the Faculty’s Sport Secretary, Arnold Efe Effor said this would boost the confidence of the participants and yield positive outcomes in the competition.

“The training will help in situations of emergency, where players and athletes may be involved in any form of injury,” he added.
