The Osun State University chapter of the Non-Academic Staff Union on Friday said members of staff under the aegis of Joint Action Committee celebrated the exit of the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Labo Popoola, because he used his position to deny some workers their rights.

On Friday, some workers swept the front of the administrative block, fried and shared bean cake in celebration of the exit of the ex-vice chancellor, whose five-year tenure officially ended on Thursday.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, the chapter Chairman of the association, Isaiah Fayemi, said, “He used his position to deny us our right; a VC that used his position to make sure some of us were sent out of our jobs unjustly.

“The members of staff are so happy, and we resolved that there would be a congress today to celebrate his exit, and to have inter-religious interdenominational prayer for the new acting vice chancellor of the university.”

But while reacting to the action of the workers, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Ademola Adesoji, said those involved did not represent the entire workforce of the institution.

Adesoji, who said the university community appreciated the ex-vice chancellor and celebrated his exit with fanfare, said, “Yesterday (Thursday), when the third substantive VC of the university finished his tenure, he was celebrated and installed as the pioneer patron of Osun State students union based on all his good deeds and support.

All the students deliberated and agreed that they were going to make him their pioneer patron; for the fact that the joint action committee is just doing this doesn’t really mean that it is the mindset of the whole staff members.”
