President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to tackling economic hardship, defeating insecurity, and securing the release of citizens held captive by criminal elements across the country.

The President’s message was delivered on Sunday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The service, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” attracted top government officials and dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack.

Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Akume congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the milestone as a testament to the resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration of democracy.

He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle, noting that many pro-democracy activists endured persecution, injuries, and even death in the quest to establish democratic rule in Nigeria.

According to the SGF, President Tinubu remains committed to fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities and will intensify efforts to ease the socio-economic challenges facing Nigerians through the delivery of sustainable democratic dividends.

Acknowledging the economic difficulties confronting many households, Akume said the government was fully aware of the hardships caused by insecurity, kidnappings, displacement, and rising living costs.
“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” he said, assuring citizens that the administration is working diligently to address the challenges with compassion and responsibility.

On security, the SGF reiterated that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority of the Federal Government. He described recent attacks and abductions across parts of the country as painful reminders that more work is needed to restore peace and security.

He stressed that the safe return of all persons in captivity remains a national priority, adding that security agencies are receiving the necessary support and resources to protect communities, safeguard lives, and preserve Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” Akume declared.

With political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections beginning to gather momentum, the SGF urged Nigerians to reject violence, hate campaigns, and divisive rhetoric, warning that democracy should not be turned into a battleground.

He specifically advised young people not to allow themselves to be used for political violence, thuggery, misinformation campaigns, ethnic hostility, or religious intolerance.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he said.

Akume also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media, and families to promote peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and responsible conduct as the country approaches another election cycle.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, interfaith harmony, and peaceful engagement with the international community, he maintained that despite existing challenges, the nation’s democratic institutions remain strong and resilient.

The SGF further commended members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in protecting the country and sustaining democratic rule.

He urged Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the June 12 heroes by working collectively towards a nation where elections are peaceful, leaders are accountable, communities are secure, and every citizen can live with dignity.
