More than 25 local players and 32 ranked Professional Squash Association (PSA) stars have gathered in Lagos to fight for honours, as well as part of the $35,000 prize money earmarked for successful players at the second Chamberlain International Squash Championship, which began in Lagos at the weekend. The championship offers players in the male category a total prize money of $25,000, while the women will share $10, 000.

The competition, which began at the indoor sports hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos at the weekend, will end on May 12. And according to its promoter, Chamberlain Usoh, the squash tournament is aimed at boosting the development of squash at the grassroots and also providing a robust platform that would nurture a new generation of players for the country.
Usor said the success of the maiden edition in 2017 spurred the organisers to raise the standard of the event this year, adding it has received the full endorsement and support of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and the World Squash Federation (WSF).
“We are ready to begin the 2018 edition of the Chamberlain International Squash Open. The players are in very high spirit. We have 32 players (16 females and 16 males) and 25 local players.
“There will be qualifying matches before the main draw of the tournament, which begins on Monday (today).”
He disclosed that the bulk of the foreign players are from Egypt, South Africa, Zimbabwe, U.S., United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, France, Scotland, Iran, Pakistan and India, adding that a top referee from the World Squash Federation (WSF) has already been assigned as the lead official for the tournament.
