The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that the over 2.3 million registered voters in Borno State will cast their votes in 3,933 polling units provided by the Commission across the 27 local government areas.
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Alhaji Mohammed Magaa’ji Ibrahim, made the disclosure, yesterday, in Maiduguri, while updating newsmen on the readiness of the Commission to conduct the 2019 general elections.
Alhaji Ibrahim said of the figure quoted above, 409,000 who are displaced from their various local government areas by the Boko Haram terrorists, will be voting in eight Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) centres in Maiduguri and other safe local government councils.
He said: “Security Architecture for the elections has been designed, the operational order developed and deployment to accompany men and materials is currently on. Over 11,000 officers and men have been deployed for the election duties to secure over 3,933 polling units (PUs), electoral staff, logistic materials, as well as buildings and premises.

“Transportation of men and materials using motor vehicles and motorcycles among others has been identified and assigned to various local government areas.
“In Borno State, eight IDPs voting centres have been identified which accommodate 409,000 registered voters. All voter registers required for the elections have been printed and will be delivered at polling units and voting points throughout the state.
“5071 Smart Card Readers to be used for accreditation of voters have been enhanced and configured and delivered to all the polling units in Borno State. Other logistic items to facilitate smooth conduct of the 2019 general elections have also been provided and delivered to all polling units.
“Registerd voters who are expected to participate in the 2019 general elections in Borno State are 2,315,956, while 3,933 polling units have been provided for them to cast their votes”, Alhaji Ibrahim added.
He reiterated the commission’s commitment to free, fair and credible elections, adding that the Commission has no preference of candidates, but is interested in deepening democracy through transparent and credible electoral process.
