The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has said more Nigerians will enjoy good governance when the revenue allocation formula being reviewed by the Federal Government is completed.

It said the third tier of government deserved more revenue being the closest to the people, adding “since the 36 states are made up of local governments, development across that lowest level will amount to development in the state.”

Speaking at a virtual event on Wednesday, ALGON President, Kolade Alabi, who is also the Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Authority in Lagos State, described the current formula as obsolete.

He said, “I thank the Federal Government for the sensitisation and for involving all local authorities and states in seeing that this allocation sharing formula is reviewed. A lot is begging for our attention and for us to address them, we need more money at the local government level.

“That was why in recent times, we advocated the review of the allocation sharing formula. More money should come to the states and the local governments; the aggregate of development that you have in a local government makes a state and what you have in the state will make the entire nation to be a beautiful place.

“Look at security; security is local and to solve that problem we have to adopt local methodology and that is why I am also clamouring for state police so that local authorities will be involved in solving security problems and other challenges we are faced with.”

He noted that unlike in the past when Bariga was synonymous with crime, the LCDA had become relatively peaceful.
